Teachers and Staff at Granville JSHS spent the afternoon of Friday, October 23 building student desks for remote learners. So many kids at home don't have a dedicated space for their studies. We see students every day "zooming in" from their couches, floor, their beds. And the kitchen table is being used by a parent, and the counters have dinner prep on them, so kids don't have their own place. That's not conducive to learning.

We followed the "Desks by Dads" plan. 22 simple wooden desks with solid legs, and a shelf were constructed. Our principal, Lisa Meade, secured over $1400 in donations from many local businesses and caring adults. The donations were spent on lumber, screws, and glue, and there was enough left to purchase a chair and a lamp for each student. Other faculty members made personalized stickers with names, and bags of donated school supplies went with each desk. dd3

20 faculty members sawed, glued, screwed and sanded for 4 hours. Others marked, held, stacked, sorted, and carried. There was a terrific feeling of camaraderie and “doing good.” Interested students had contacted Mrs. Meade, who distributed the desks the following morning to needy students. Mr. Poucher even delivered a couple of desks to students that didn’t have transportation.

Some materials remain leftover, and Mrs. Goodwin has already volunteered her Principles of  Engineering students for the task of repeating the process when more desk requests come in.  We had great coverage from Channel 10 news in Albany, and the Granville Sentinel!
