Tiernan Weeden has been selected to become a statewide student ambassador for the New York Civil Liberties Union. The Student Ambassadors program is a youth leadership program focused on social justice, activism and the law.

According to the NYCLU, “Student Ambassadors meet weekly to discuss social justice issues and get hands-on training in peer education and community organizing. The program offers students the opportunity to learn about civil rights issues impacting their communities, develop youth led advocacy campaigns, work with professionals on civil liberties issues, and much more. With the ongoing pandemic, the students will also learn about the inequities amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, and work to find solutions to ensure that policies created are equitable and youth-driven.” One of the topics this group will also examine is that of suspension rates and its impact on the school to prison pipeline.

Community service hours and limited stipends are given to the ambassadors. This is a year long appointment and we couldn’t be prouder to have Mr. Tiernan Weeden chosen to serve in this youth activism role!

Tiernan is an accomplished Senior at Granville Jr. Sr. High School and the son of Heather and Roger Weeden of Hampton, NY. His post secondary goals include pursuing interests in political science and law in order to make a positive change in the world.
